How To Photograph Car Accident Damage

Good photographs can help show what happened and what damage was present after a collision. Only take photographs when it is safe to do so.

Driver photographing car accident damage and the road scene
01

Photograph the whole vehicle

Take photographs from each side and from the front and rear. This gives a clear record of the vehicle's overall condition.

02

Photograph the damage closely

Take close photographs of every damaged area, including broken panels, lights, bumpers, wheels, glass and any visible marks.

03

Photograph the other vehicle

Where safe and appropriate, photograph the other vehicle and its registration number.

04

Photograph the wider scene

Road markings, signs, junctions, traffic lights, debris and the position of the vehicles can all help show the circumstances of an accident.

05

Keep the original images

Do not rely only on edited or compressed versions. Keep the original photographs and store them somewhere safe.
